Parliamentary cavalry surprised the Scottish Committee of Estates gathered at Alyth in Perthshire in August 1651; virtually the entire Scottish government including the Lord Chancellor was captured in a single raid; with their government captured and their army marching toward Worcester the Scots had effectively lost the war.
