History & Significance

The MacIans of Ardnamurchan, a branch of the MacDonalds who had sided with the government at the forfeiture of the Lordship, were hated by other MacDonald branches as traitors. Clan Ranald MacDonalds raided Ardnamurchan peninsula repeatedly in the early sixteenth century. The MacIans were eventually destroyed as a clan by the MacDonalds of Islay and their lands absorbed.
