History & Significance

Deal Castle and Walmer Castle were seized by Royalists during the 1648 Second Civil War rising and held in conjunction with the mutinous Parliamentary fleet anchored in the Downs. The Prince of Wales in the fleet briefly threatened a landing. The castles covered the anchorage used by the mutineers.
