History & Significance

At Otford in 776 the Kentishmen won a rare victory over Offa of Mercia. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle records it as a great battle. But Offa returned and by 785 had Kent firmly in his grip, executing its king. Offa's control of Kent gave Mercia access to Canterbury, the archbishopric, and the Continent. The victory and subsequent subjugation represent Offa's emergence as the dominant English king of his era.
