History & Significance

Ingimund and his Norse-Irish followers were expelled from Dublin around 902 and sought settlement land from Aethelflaed who granted them the Wirral peninsula. Norse settlers established themselves at Meols, Thingwall, and other settlements whose Scandinavian place-names survive. However Ingimund then attempted to seize Chester by force and Aethelflaed had to defend the city against the Norse-Irish assault.

Forces Involved

Aethelflaed: c. 1,000–1,500. Ingimund's Norse-Irish: c. 800–1,200.
