History & Significance

After the Parliamentary army besieging Devizes was destroyed at Roundway Down on 13 July 1643, the Royalist garrison under Sir Ralph Hopton was relieved and the town remained firmly in Royalist hands. Devizes became a major Royalist base for operations in Wiltshire for the remainder of the war, holding out until the collapse of the Royalist cause in 1645-46.
