History & Significance

After the sack of Aberdeen in September 1644, Montrose conducted operations through Angus as he sought to evade the pursuing Covenanting army under Argyll. Moving through the glens of Angus he demonstrated his extraordinary ability to cover ground rapidly with his Highland force, outpacing Covenanting cavalry across difficult terrain. The Angus march established the pattern of swift Highland movement that characterised the entire campaign.
