The Battle

History & Significance

The Mackenzies under Kenneth mac Matheson consolidated their hold on Kintail in the early fourteenth century following the political disruption of the Wars of Independence. Kintail was the ancestral MacRae and Mackenzie territory in Wester Ross and its consolidation gave the Mackenzies control of the key western Highland passes through Glen Shiel and into the Great Glen. The Kintail base was the launchpad for all subsequent Mackenzie expansion.
