The battle of Ringmere in 1010 was part of the wave of Danish attacks on England in the reign of Aethelred the Unready. Ulfketel Snilling, the most capable English military leader of the period — called Ulfketel by the Danes themselves in tribute to his fighting quality — engaged the Danish force under Thorkell the Tall at Ringmere in Norfolk. Despite fighting bravely, the English were defeated. The Danes then ravaged East Anglia, Cambridge, Thetford and beyond. Ulfketel\'s repeated battles against the Danes make him one of the most significant English commanders of the late Anglo-Saxon period.
