The Battle

History & Significance

Early in his reign Ecgfrith crushed a major Pictish rebellion in a battle at Two Rivers, killing the Pictish king. This victory extended Northumbrian control deep into Pictish territory and seemed to confirm Northumbrian supremacy over the whole north. It set up the later overconfidence that led to Nechtansmere.
