History & Significance

Edward took Nottingham in 920 and ordered a burh to be built on the south bank of the Trent opposite the existing Danish town, with a bridge linking the two. The Chronicle records the Danes in Nottingham submitted and Edward garrisoned the town with English and Danish troops. With Nottingham secured, all five of the great Danish boroughs — Derby, Leicester, Stamford, Nottingham, and Lincoln — were now under English control.
