The Battle

History & Significance

The 1570 national beacon review, ordered in the aftermath of the Rising of the North and with growing Spanish hostility, created the comprehensive beacon system that would give its famous performance in 1588. The review established that beacons should be maintained at intervals of no more than five miles along the entire English coast and that each county lord lieutenant should be personally responsible for the readiness of the beacons in his county. The 1570 system was the direct ancestor of the Armada warning network.
