History & Significance

In the years before Nechtansmere, Ecgfrith pushed Northumbrian power hard against Pictish resistance in Lothian. The East Lothian River Tyne marked a contested zone. Skirmishes along the river and its crossings were part of the escalating conflict between Northumbria and Pictland that finally exploded in 685. Every Northumbrian advance brought Pictish retribution closer.
