History & Significance

The second Viking Age brought renewed raiding to Lincolnshire. The area of Lindsey — the ancient northern division of Lincolnshire — was raided repeatedly. In 993 the Chronicle records raiding at Bamburgh and then along the east coast; in subsequent years Lincolnshire communities paid danegeld. The raids reflected the weakness of Æthelred's government and the wealth of the Lincolnshire towns, particularly Lincoln itself.

Forces Involved

Danes: c. 1,500–3,000. Lincolnshire levies: c. 800–2,000.
