History & Significance

On 28 July 1643 Cromwell fought a remarkable uphill cavalry action on Beacon Hill above Gainsborough, routing Royalist cavalry under Colonel Charles Cavendish who was killed in the pursuit. Cromwell then had to disengage when Newcastle arrived with a relief army, conducting a disciplined fighting withdrawal that preserved his force.
