History & Significance

Rochester and the Medway towns became the flashpoint of the Kentish rising of 1648 when county Royalists seized arms and proclaimed for the king. The rising in the Medway corridor forced Fairfax to abandon his planned embarkation to Ireland and march against the insurgents.
