History & Significance

The Cornish rebels of 1497, protesting against taxes levied for the Scottish war, marched through Hampshire and Surrey on their way to confront Henry VII near London. Local forces were unable or unwilling to stop them. The rebels gathered further support en route before their defeat at Deptford Bridge. Their passage through Hampshire reflects the sympathy for their cause in southern England.
