The Battle

History & Significance

A key element of Bigods coordinated rising in January 1537 was an attempted seizure of Hull by rebels under William Nicholson. Unlike October 1536 when the town had surrendered, the Hull garrison under Sir Ralph Ellerker held firm and the rebel assault was repulsed. The failure at Hull simultaneously with the Scarborough failure destroyed the strategic plan of Bigods rising and confirmed that the north would not rise again as it had in 1536.
