History & Significance

The Mercian Register records Aethelflaed built a burh at Runcorn on the Mersey in 915. Runcorn guarded the tidal crossing of the Mersey and was part of the chain of burhs designed to contain Norse raiders who had colonised the Wirral. Along with Chester and Eddisbury, Runcorn completed the defensive arc around the Wirral peninsula. Norse settlements on the Wirral are attested by place-name evidence and the Ingimund tradition.
