History & Significance

Weymouth and its twin town Melcombe Regis had both suffered from French raids throughout the Hundred Years War and the 1539 muster reflected royal recognition of their vulnerability. The establishment of an artillery blockhouse at the harbour was part of the same national programme that produced the major Device Forts at Deal, Portland, and St Mawes, extending the principle of artillery harbour defence to secondary ports.
