History & Significance

The Scottish Covenanting army crossed the Aire at Ferrybridge in January 1644 during its advance into Yorkshire to join the Parliamentary forces against Newcastle. Royalist forces attempted to hold the crossing but were unable to prevent the Scots from forcing their way across and linking up with Fairfax forces.
