The Battle

History & Significance

Geoffrey de Mandeville, Earl of Essex, was arrested by Stephen at court in 1143 and forced to surrender the Tower of London and his other castles. Released without trial, Geoffrey immediately turned to open rebellion and began devastating raids from his Fen bases. The episode illustrated Stephen's inability to maintain the loyalty of the most powerful magnates without either purchasing it or crushing it, and the Tower changed hands in this political-military crisis.
