The Battle

History & Significance

Cowdray House near Midhurst in Sussex, seat of the Royalist Viscount Montague, was used as a base for Royalist sympathisers in western Sussex during 1643. The great Elizabethan house and its Catholic owners made it a natural focus for local Royalism in an otherwise predominantly Parliamentary county.
