Disaffected lords who had supported James III mounted a challenge to the new James IV regime in 1489, besieging Stirling Castle. James IV, though only 15, personally assembled forces to relieve the castle. The siege was the principal military event of the post-Sauchieburn instability. Its failure to take the castle confirmed royal authority and James IV used the episode to demonstrate decisive leadership early in his reign.
