The Battle

History & Significance

James IV personally led a raid into Northumberland alongside Perkin Warbeck, who proclaimed himself Richard IV of England. The force penetrated four miles into England, burned villages, and seized cattle before retreating. Warbeck issued a proclamation calling on Englishmen to support him — none did. The raid was the closest Warbeck ever came to English soil as a military force, and its failure demonstrated that he had no English support base.
