History & Significance

Aethelflaed refortified Tamworth, the ancient capital of Mercia, in 913. Tamworth had been the seat of the Mercian kings and its refortification as a burh was symbolically charged, representing the restoration of Mercian power after the devastating Danish raids of the 870s. The Chronicle records the construction in the early summer of 913. Tamworth became a major Mercian administrative centre and would be the scene of Edward the Elder later campaigns.
