The Danish fleet landed at Sandwich at midsummer 1006 and ravaged the surrounding area; King Aethelred called out the levies of Wessex and Mercia to guard the harvest but this achieved nothing. The fleet later moved on and, after Martinmas, took its winter quarters on the Isle of Wight (not at Sandwich), from where it continued raiding into Hampshire and Berkshire.
