During the Second Civil War in south Wales, a Royalist force moving through Monmouthshire toward the main Welsh army clashed with a Parliamentary outpost near Pontypool. The Parliamentary forces in Monmouthshire attempted to intercept Royalist groups moving west to join the main force assembling for what became St Fagans. Several minor confrontations occurred in the Monmouthshire valleys in May 1648.
