History & Significance

A skirmish occurred at St Ninians near Stirling during the 1651 Cromwellian campaign as English forces closed on Stirling. The village of St Ninians, on the southern approach to Stirling, saw fighting between Scottish defenders and English advance parties. A notable incident was the accidental explosion of the church tower which the Scots were using as a powder magazine, which killed many defenders.
