The Antonine Wall is a Roman fortified frontier constructed in the second century AD, forming a defensive barrier across central Scotland between the Firth of Forth and the Firth of Clyde. Built under the emperor Antoninus Pius around AD 142, it represented Rome's northernmost frontier in Britain and was maintained for approximately twenty years before being abandoned in favour of Hadrian's Wall to the south. The monument consists of a substantial earthwork comprising a stone-built wall with a ditch on its northern face, accompanied by a series of fortlets and larger forts at regular intervals to control movement and garrison troops. At this location near Woodside Cottage in Linlithgowshire, the wall's surviving remains form part of the extensive archaeological landscape that preserves evidence of one of the most significant military installations of Roman Scotland.
