Overview

History & significance

The Antonine Wall is a Roman frontier barrier constructed across central Scotland between approximately 142 and 162 CE during the reign of the Emperor Antoninus Pius. This fortlet, located in the vicinity of Kinneil House in West Lothian, formed part of the chain of auxiliary installations that supported the turf-built wall stretching from the Firth of Forth to the Firth of Clyde. The site comprises structural remains characteristic of Antonine fortifications, including ditches and stone foundations, which have been partially preserved within the archaeological record. The fortlet exemplifies the Roman military's systematic approach to frontier control and garrison placement during the height of their occupation of Lowland Scotland.
