History & significance

Antonine Wall and fortlet, northwest of Carleith Primary School, is a scheduled monument comprising part of the Antonine Wall defensive system and an associated fortlet. The Antonine Wall was constructed around AD 142 under the Roman Emperor Antoninus Pius as the northern frontier of Roman Britain, extending across central Scotland from the Firth of Forth to the Firth of Clyde. The fortlet at this location represents one of the auxiliary installations positioned along the wall's length to control movement and support the garrison. The monument survives as earthwork remains indicative of the Roman military engineering that characterised this frontier during the second century AD.
