The Antonine Wall is a Roman frontier fortification constructed during the reign of the Emperor Antoninus Pius, approximately 140 to 160 CE, extending across central Scotland between the Firth of Forth and the Firth of Clyde. This section, located near Balmuildy Road and Cawder House in Lanarkshire, forms part of the wall's northeastern extent and represents the turf and stone construction typical of the monument's engineering. The Antonine Wall served as Rome's northernmost permanent frontier in Britain and has yielded significant archaeological evidence of Roman military occupation and Scottish Iron Age settlement. The remains at this location preserve sections of the defensive structure, including associated ditches and fort infrastructure, providing material testimony to Roman Britain's expansion into Scotland during the second century CE.
