Borrowdale graphite mines is an ancient monument comprising the remains of graphite extraction workings and an associated grinding mill located in the Lake District, Cumberland. The site dates from the sixteenth century onwards, when the discovery of high-quality graphite deposits in Borrowdale made the location commercially significant for the production of pencil material and other graphite products. The mines themselves represent the physical evidence of this extractive industry, whilst the grinding mill would have processed the raw graphite into usable form. This monument survives as a testament to the early industrial exploitation of mineral resources in the English Lake District and the technological infrastructure that supported this important historical trade.
