Caldicot Castle is a medieval fortress situated in Monmouthshire, south Wales, founded in the late eleventh century as a Norman stronghold. The castle comprises a substantial stone keep within a series of defensive baileys, with later medieval additions including a gatehouse and curtain walls that demonstrate the evolution of military architecture from the Norman period through to the fourteenth century. The site served as an important centre of lordly power controlling the coastal plain of Gwent, and its fortifications reflect both its strategic significance and the considerable resources invested in its construction and maintenance. The unoccupied portions of the castle preserve significant archaeological and architectural evidence of medieval domestic and defensive functions, making it a valuable record of Norman and medieval Welsh castle development.
