Caldicot Castle is a medieval fortification located in Monmouthshire, South Wales, founded in the late eleventh century as a motte-and-bailey stronghold by the Norman knight Fitz Osbern. The castle was subsequently developed with substantial stone defences during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, including a prominent round keep and curtain walls that exemplify the evolution of military architecture during the High Medieval period. The site remains significant as an example of Norman military strategy in the conquest and consolidation of South Wales, demonstrating the typical progression from earthwork fortifications to permanent stone structures. Today, the unoccupied portions of the castle preserve substantial archaeological remains that continue to contribute to understanding of medieval Welsh-Norman relations and defensive architecture of the period.
