Cruggleton Castle is a medieval stronghold situated on the Rhinns of Galloway in Wigtownshire, South West Scotland. The castle comprises the remains of a substantial stone keep and associated defensive works, dating principally to the thirteenth century, though the site may have had earlier fortifications. The castle was strategically positioned to control the surrounding coastline and inland territories during a period of significant political importance in south-western Scotland. The ruins, now under the care of Historic Environment Scotland, represent an important example of medieval military architecture in the region and have yielded archaeological evidence illuminating settlement and occupation patterns in late medieval Galloway.
