Duffus Castle is a Norman motte-and-bailey fortress located in Morayshire, Scotland, established in the early twelfth century as part of the Anglo-Norman expansion into northern Scotland. The castle comprises a substantial mound, or motte, surrounded by a ditch and outer earthworks typical of Norman military architecture, with later stone structures including a keep built upon the motte itself. The site represents an important example of early medieval military engineering in Scotland and reflects the consolidation of Norman feudal authority in the northern regions during the reign of King David I. The ruins remain a significant archaeological monument documenting the transition from earthwork fortifications to stone construction during the medieval period.
