Overview

History & significance

Hadrian's Wall and vallum between Baron's Dike and Birky Lane at Walby is a section of the frontier fortification constructed across northern Britain during the reign of Emperor Hadrian in the early second century AD. This stretch, encompassing wall miles 60, 61 and 62 in Cumberland, preserves substantial remains of both the stone wall itself and the vallum, the defensive ditch and bank system that ran parallel to the wall. The site demonstrates the characteristic Roman military engineering of the period, with the vallum forming part of the logistical and defensive infrastructure that supported the wall's role as a controlled frontier barrier. These remains represent a significant portion of the inscribed World Heritage Site and remain among the best-preserved sections of this frontier system in northern England.
