Segedunum is a Roman fort located at Wallsend in Tyne and Wear that formed the eastern terminus of Hadrian's Wall. Constructed in the early second century AD under the Emperor Hadrian, the fort was built to control the strategically important mouth of the River Tyne and served as a supply base for the wall garrison. The fort occupied approximately two hectares and was defended by stone walls with multiple gates, containing the characteristic range of military buildings including barracks, a headquarters building, and granaries. Segedunum remained occupied throughout the Roman period in Britain and has yielded extensive archaeological evidence of military occupation, trade goods, and domestic life within the fort complex.
