Overview

History & significance

Inchmahome Priory is a ruined Augustinian monastery situated on an island in the Lake of Menteith in Perthshire, Scotland. Founded in 1238 by the Earl of Menteith, the priory operated as an important religious house throughout the medieval period, with its community maintaining scholarly and pastoral functions until the Scottish Reformation of the 1560s. The surviving ruins comprise the church, cloister buildings, and associated structures characteristic of a substantial medieval monastery, with elements of the thirteenth-century fabric remaining visible in the stonework. The site gained particular historical prominence as the refuge where the young Mary Queen of Scots was sheltered in 1547 whilst her claim to the Scottish throne was contested, an event that underscores the priory's significance within Scottish ecclesiastical and political history.
