Incline Haulage Systems, Cefn Ynysfeio, Treherbert is a post-medieval incline drumhouse built to serve the coal extraction industry of the South Wales coalfield. The structure sits above the South Wales Upper Coal Measures Formation, a Westphalian sequence of mudstone, siltstone, sandstone and workable coal seams that made this locality attractive for mining from the 19th century onwards. The drumhouse housed the winding engine and associated machinery needed to operate the inclined tramway that transported coal from the pit head down the steep valley slopes typical of the Rhondda area.
The incline system represents a characteristic form of industrial transport infrastructure developed to overcome the challenging topography of the South Wales valleys. Such drumhouses were purpose-built structures designed to accommodate large steam-powered winding engines that controlled the movement of laden and empty coal trucks along fixed rails.
