History & significance

Jedburgh Franciscan Friary is a monastic foundation established in the thirteenth century in the Scottish Borders town of Jedburgh. The friary belonged to the Franciscan order and formed an important spiritual and intellectual centre within Roxburghshire until its dissolution during the Reformation in the sixteenth century. The surviving remains comprise substantial stone structures that reflect the architectural character typical of late medieval Scottish friaries, though the site has undergone significant changes since its abandonment as a religious community.
