Latheronwheel House is a Neolithic chambered cairn located in Caithness, in the far north of Scotland. Built during the fourth and third millennia before Christ, the monument comprises a stone burial chamber set within a mound of stacked stones, a construction type characteristic of Scotland's Atlantic seaboard communities. The cairn sits upon bedrock of Middle Old Red Sandstone formed during the Devonian period, comprising layers of conglomerate, sandstone, siltstone and mudstone that would have been exposed in the surrounding landscape when the monument was built.
The site lies approximately 580 metres south-east of Latheronwheel, within the distinctive rolling moorland of Caithness. This region supported Neolithic farming communities who built such monuments as communal burial places and territorial markers across several centuries of use. The exposed geology of the Caithness coast and hinterland would have provided both the stone required for construction and the open ground suitable for monument placement.
The cairn is now protected as a scheduled monument by Historic Environment Scotland under reference number SM462, ensuring the preservation of this significant archaeological site and the evidence it contains of early farming settlement in the north of Scotland.
