Mains of Kelly is a post-medieval enclosure complex located 450 metres west-north-west of Kelly in Angus, Scotland. The site sits upon bedrock of the Arbuthnott-Garvock Group, a sequence of Pragian sandstone interbedded with conglomerate, siltstone and mudstone that underlies much of the local landscape. This geological foundation, common throughout Angus, provided accessible stone for the construction and maintenance of the enclosure walls.
The monument comprises a series of field enclosures typical of post-medieval agricultural reorganisation in lowland Scotland. Such enclosures reflect the intensification and formalisation of farming practices from the 16th century onwards, as landowners sought to improve and control their holdings. The layout and construction of the Mains of Kelly enclosures would have supported the management of livestock and cultivation of arable land associated with a substantial farm steading.
The site is protected by Historic Environment Scotland as a scheduled monument under reference SM6620, recognising its significance as an example of post-medieval rural settlement and land management.
