The moated site located approximately one kilometre south-west of Rockingham Castle is a medieval earthwork monument of Norman or later medieval date. The site comprises a substantial water-filled or formerly water-filled moat surrounding a raised platform, a defensive arrangement typical of smaller manorial settlements of the twelfth to sixteenth centuries. Its proximity to Rockingham Castle suggests it may have formed part of the castle's wider estate management system or have served as an independent defended residence for a minor landholding within the castle's sphere of influence. The monument survives as an important archaeological record of medieval settlement patterns and defensive architecture in Northamptonshire.
