Overview

History & significance

Nether Glenny is a site of cup and ring marked rocks located in Perthshire, Scotland, approximately 700 metres to the north-west and west-north-west of the settlement. The rock carvings belong to the prehistoric period, most likely dating to the Bronze Age, when such abstract geometric motifs were incised into natural rock outcrops across Scotland and northern Britain. Cup and ring marks consist of circular depressions surrounded by concentric rings pecked into the stone surface, and their precise ritual or functional purpose remains debated amongst archaeologists, though they may have held ceremonial or territorial significance. The Nether Glenny examples form part of the wider distribution of such rock art across Tayside and represent an important record of prehistoric artistic expression and land use in early Bronze Age Perthshire.
