Penyard Castle is a Norman motte and bailey castle situated near Ross-on-Wye in Herefordshire, dating to the late eleventh or early twelfth century. The monument comprises a substantial earthwork with a raised mound and surrounding defensive ditches characteristic of the motte and bailey form of early Norman fortification. It occupies a strategically commanding position on high ground overlooking the Wye Valley, reflecting the importance placed upon territorial control in the Welsh Marches during this period. Though no masonry structures survive above ground, the earthworks remain well-preserved and indicate a fortification of considerable scale constructed during the decades following the Norman conquest.
