Shieling settlement close to the mouth of Scale Beck is a post-medieval pastoral settlement located in Cumberland, England. The site comprises the earthwork remains of seasonal shelters and associated structures characteristic of upland shieling practice, whereby livestock herds were moved to high pastures during summer months. Dating to the post-medieval period, the settlement reflects the transhumant pastoral economy that sustained upland communities in the Lake District and wider Pennine regions. The physical remains consist of stone-built structures and associated field systems that demonstrate the organized exploitation of marginal pastoral land during the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries.
