Southdean Law is a multivallate iron age fort and settlement located in Roxburghshire in the Scottish Borders. The site occupies a hilltop position where mafic igneous bedrock, intruded during the Permian period, forms a naturally defensive foundation. This exposed dark volcanic geology would have provided both a commanding vantage point and resistance to erosion for the settlement's inhabitants.
The fort is defined by concentric defensive ramparts that encircle the summit, a design characteristic of later iron age settlements in southern Scotland built during the first few centuries before the Roman conquest. The multiple vallations suggest a settlement of some substance, likely serving both domestic and defensive functions for the surrounding community during this period of increasing social stratification.
Southdean Law is protected as a scheduled monument by Historic Environment Scotland under reference SM2211, recognising its archaeological significance.
