Overview

History & significance

Southdean Law is a multivallate Iron Age fort and settlement located in Roxburghshire in the Scottish Borders. The site is defined by multiple defensive ramparts enclosing an elevated position, characteristic of Late Iron Age fortified settlements in southeast Scotland. Occupation at Southdean Law is broadly attributable to the later pre-Roman Iron Age, contemporary with the intensive settlement of the Borders region prior to the Roman advance into Scotland. The fort represents a significant example of native Scottish fortification strategy during this period, reflecting the hierarchical settlement patterns and territorial organisation of Iron Age communities in the region.
