The lower section of the southern Etherley Incline is a scheduled ancient monument forming part of the Stockton and Darlington Railway, the pioneering public railway opened in 1825 between Stockton-on-Tees and Darlington in County Durham. The incline was constructed to overcome the significant gradient at Etherley, employing a stationary steam engine and rope haulage to draw laden wagons up the slope, a solution typical of early railway engineering where locomotive technology had not yet advanced sufficiently to manage such steep gradients independently. The surviving remains of this lower section preserve important evidence of the technological and engineering solutions developed during the early industrial age of railways in northern England.
